Why claims run high

Brands measure range at the lowest assist level, with a light rider, on flat ground, often around 12 mph and in mild weather. Ride1Up, for example, states a 160 lb rider at 60–80°F on flat ground in PAS 1 with no throttle; Velotric a rider under 187 lb in PAS 1 on flat roads.

Our "easy" scenario is close to those conditions, and lands near the claims. Speed is what breaks them: air drag power grows with the cube of speed, so energy per mile climbs fast above 15 mph. Throttle-only riding removes your 35–120 W of pedaling, and hills add the work of lifting rider and bike.

What independent tests show

In 7 run-to-empty tests at high assist or on throttle for bikes in this list (Electric Bike Report, OutdoorGearLab), riders got a median 43% of the claim. Brand claims tend to match only the lowest-assist runs, within about 20%.
