How long does an e-bike battery last?

Most e-bike batteries keep about 80% of their capacity after roughly 800 to 1,000 full charge cycles. At a typical 41 miles per charge, 800 cycles at an average 90% health is around 30,000 miles. Replacement packs cost about $370–$600 for direct-to-consumer brands and over $1,100 for Bosch.

Cycles, years and miles

A full cycle is 100% of capacity used, in one charge or several partial ones. Bosch warrants 500 cycles or 2 years with at least 60% capacity left; Shimano guarantees 60% after 1,000 cycles. A reasonable planning figure for a direct-to-consumer pack is 80% health after about 800 cycles.

At a typical 41 miles per charge, 800 cycles at an average 90% health is about 30,000 miles: most riders reach that after several years.

Replacement cost

  • Lectric 672 Wh long-range pack: $575; semi-integrated pack $489.
  • Aventon (Level / Aventure compatible): $499.99 list.
  • Bosch PowerTube 750: about $1,300 list.

Spread over its life, a $575 pack costs about 1.9¢ per mile: roughly five times what the electricity costs. See charging cost.

What an older battery does to range

Range falls in step with capacity: a pack at 80% health gives about 80% of its original range. Set battery health in the simulator to see your bike's range today.

Common questions

How do I make my e-bike battery last longer?

Store it at 40–80% charge in a cool, dry place; avoid leaving it at 100% or empty for long; never charge below freezing; and use the brand charger. Partial charges are fine: four 25% charges count as one full cycle.

Is it worth replacing an e-bike battery?

Usually yes once capacity falls below about 70%: a new direct-to-consumer pack costs $370–$600, well under the price of a new bike. Buy the brand pack or a certified (UL 2271) replacement; uncertified packs are a fire risk.

Can I leave my e-bike charger plugged in?

Unplug it when the battery is full. Chargers draw about 2 W when idle, and keeping a pack at 100% speeds up aging.
