Ranked by a published rule
Best e-bikes for steep hills
The ENGWE M20 3.0 (36%), the ENGWE L20 3.0 (22%), and the ENGWE EP-2 3.0 (22%) come out on top. Bikes whose brand publishes both peak power and torque (mid-drives: peak power), ranked by the steepest grade each can hold at 8 mph on throttle or full assist with a 200 lb rider and no pedaling, from motor peak power, drive efficiency and, for hub motors, torque at the wheel. The grade with moderate pedaling is shown too: mid-drives gain most from pedaling because they use the bike gears. Bikes missing those specs are listed below the table, unranked.

How we rank
The same rule is applied to all 76 e-bikes in our database, using the same physics model as the simulator. No brand pays for placement, and affiliate programs play no part in the order. Ranges are the middle of a ±20% band; see the methodology.
