Winter range: expect about 17% less at 32°F and 28% less at 20°F

How much range does an e-bike lose in cold weather?

On our model of a 672 Wh commuter, range drops from 44 mi at 70°F to 36 mi at 32°F and 31 mi at 20°F. Lithium-ion batteries deliver less energy when cold, and the loss reverses once the battery warms up.

Our winter guide models a 672 Wh, 750 W commuter carrying a 180 lb rider at 16 mph over rolling hills.

That bike goes 44 mi at 70°F, 40 mi at 50°F, 36 mi at 32°F, 31 mi at 20°F and 23 mi at 0°F. The capacity figures (85% at 32°F, 75% at 20°F) come from Battery University discharge data.

Do not charge a lithium-ion battery below freezing. Bring it indoors and let it reach room temperature first.

Keeping the battery indoors until you ride, using a neoprene cover and keeping tires properly inflated all help. Every bike page on the site shows that bike's range at 70, 50, 32 and 20°F.
