SPOKES for e-bikes

Spoke length calculator

This allows to calculate the length of the spokes for the electric engine in the wheel

Fill in the fields below to calculate the length of the spokes for the electric engine in the bicycle wheel. If you do not know how to fill in individual parameters, click on 'more information' to see a hint for a given parameter.
1. The diameter of the end of the spokes  mm - more information
2. The diameter of the beginning of the spokes  mm - more information
3. Distance from the wheel axis  mm - more information
4. Number of crosses  more information
5. Number of spokes  more information

Spoke length

Hints

1. The diameter of the end of the spokes up
It can be assumed that it is the inner diameter of the rim, but keep in mind that the spoke is best kept in the nipple, the nipple and the spoke thread fully overlap. In connection with this, the length of the nipple hidden in the rim should be added to the length of the spoke. This is usually 2-3mm, thus, the diameter of the spoke end is about 4-6 mm greater than the inner diameter of the rim.

The inner diameter of the rim is difficult to measure, so it can be counted by subtracting the 2x height of the profile of the rim from its outer diameter.

2. The diameter of the beginning of the spokes up
The diameter of the spoke holes in the engine is assumed for this parameter, counting to the outer edge of the hole.

3. Distance from the wheel axis up
The distance of the beginning of the spoke mounted in the engine flange to the wheel axis. In some engines, the flange with holes for the spokes is positioned centrally with respect to the wheel axis, so that the distance from the axis of the wheel is identical on both sides (Example A). There are often engines, where the flange with holes for the spokes is not centered with respect to the wheel axis, so it may be necessary to choose a different length of the spokes for both sides of the wheel (Example B).

4. Number of crosses up
The number of crosses, i.e. the points of intersection of one spoke with the other spokes, arranged on the same side of the wheel.
Example A - 0 crosses - the so-called French coil
Example B - 1 cross
Example C - 2 crosses
Example D - 3 crosses

5. Number of spokes up
The total number of the spokes in the wheel. Electric engines typically encountered in the wheel support 36 spokes, but there are also those supporting 32 spokes and others.
